The Free Library Every Student Needs: Sci-Hub

-

Studying at university and college has a lot of challenges, and one of them is accessibility to academic papers. Since you’re studying at an academic level, you need scientific research to learn and justify your essays, and Sci-Hub can help you with that.

What Is Sci-Hub?

Founded by Alexandra Elbayakan, Khazak programmer, Sci-Hub is an online library with access to over 80 million research papers. This site bypasses paywalls to let you read any scientific publication for free, which are usually available at pretty hefty prices.

This way, you can keep on studying without ever worrying about money. Be it writing an essay for your degree or satisfying your hunger for knowledge, Sci-Hub will have you covered.

Why Shadow Libraries Exist?

Books are written to be read, if not, why would there ever be a book that no one can read? This is why shadow libraries, such as Sci-Hub, exist. Reading and studying are a right for everyone, especially students, which is why most countries invest in public education.

However, the increasingly steep costs of academic books detriment this right greatly. How am I supposed to learn about Jean Piaget’s developmental psychology if books about the topic usually go around 30 to 40 dollars? A theory published the previous century!

That’s why many shadow libraries exist, and even academics are minding them less and less over the years.

The excessive amount of money makes researchers gain very little profit from their papers. The inaccessibility of these studies hinders their awareness a lot. Because of this, scientists don’t disavow the existence of shadow libraries: they get free advertisement.

How to Use Sci-Hub

Now, how do I use Sci-Hub? It’s not as easy as writing, for example, Mapping the Margins: Intersectionality, Identity Politics, and Violence against Women of Color by Kimberle Crenshaw.

You need to enter the DOI in the search engine of Sci-Hub. What’s a DOI? The digital object identifier, or DOI, is a code attached to any digital book. You won’t have any trouble in finding a book’s DOI since it’s public information attached to any officialized academic paper.

Keep in mind, however, that certain DOIs are impossible to access in Sci-Hub due to constant lawsuits. Any academic papers published in 2021 won’t be available in Sci-Hub and the site has been banned in many countries. The price of freedom, indeed.

Sci-Hub Is Blocked In My Country. What Do I Do?

Just like The Pirate Bay, Sci-Hub has been blocked in many countries due to the infringement of copyright. Despite this impediment, you can easily avoid this obstacle. How?

First off, you need to understand how this blockade actually works. All country governments have control over internet service providers (ISPs), so they issue an order to block a domain so that nobody can see its content. That’s where VPNs come into play.

VPNs, virtual private networks, relocate your IP address, which is your identity tag on the internet so that you can access sites you currently can’t in your country. This way you can disregard the ban on Sci-Hub and get all the knowledge you rightfully deserve.

If you’re unfamiliar with VPNs and how they work, here’s a more in-depth guide on how to use a VPN to enter Sci-Hub

Read to Your Heart’s Content!

Now that you have your PDF ready, what’s next? Reading it, of course! But not quite yet: before you start reading like a madman, here is an essential tip from a university student, which is me, that has quite some experience on reading digitally:

Take Breaks Regularly

Breaks are essential in your study time not only because your brain needs them, but also because it’s a different type of reading for your eyes.

On one hand, your body and brain need to rest for a while. It’s advisable to stop reading every one hour, stand up and move your legs a little before getting back on track, otherwise you’ll start to suffer from back pain quite often when reading too much.

On the other hand, although you don’t notice, when you’re reading on a screen, your eyes are looking at an image that refreshes itself all the time. This is an extremely important detail when you’re reading that nobody pays attention to.

It’s advisable to read on a screen that has a refresh rate of 120 frames per second, which many smartphones don’t have, so reading on your mobile is a no-go. Your best bet would be reading on tablets and screens since they have higher refresh rates.

Thanks For Reading!

That’s all for now. I hope I made your studying much easier. We’ve all been there, so hang on and rely on sites like Sci-Hub to fulfill your ultimate goal: graduating!
